All You Need is Love

Did the Beatles have it right when they sang these words? After 20+ years of counseling unhappy couples, confused teenagers and struggling families, my answer would be yes, love is the answer. But not like most people would think. It is not the love of a man or woman. It is not the love of self. And the answer to your pain is not by seeking comfort from anything this world has to offer. During this month everywhere you look you will see pinks and reds of every shade, pointing to an occasion when spouses buy cards and gifts to express their devotion to one another, but let us take a moment to meditate on this word, love. Is love simply a word we say to those who are closest to us? Is it a feeling, an affectionate emotion that seems to come and go, expressing itself in almost uncontrollable ways? Is it an action, perhaps in how we choose to serve one another, is it through physical connections or by the gifts we give? The kind of love that heals all wounds and binds up broken hearts, is a love like no other…Love is a person. God is love. (Psalm 147:3, 1 John 4:8)

Unlike the fragmented love that you may have received from an unhealthy parent or an abusive partner, the love of God is perfect. God’s love is enduring. (Psalm 136:1) If you don’t believe me, if you have ever felt unloved, unseen, or unheard in your times of seeking the Lord, I urge you to take on a new perspective today, one where you receive rather than pursue. Just as Christ is the Bridegroom and we, the Church are His Bride, allow Him to “woo” you. Be still, be alert to His presence, but position yourself to listen rather than be overly anxious and quick to speak, resist making your alone time with God a time where you fill the space with your requests. Instead, try to simply enjoy your time with the Lover of your soul. (Psalm 23:3) He is fascinated with you. He rejoices over you with singing. (Zephaniah 3:17)

There is no amount of striving and self effort that can make God love you anymore, or any less. His love is steadfast. Unmoving. No matter your actions, as long as you come back to Him. Ask for forgiveness, and receive His love and mercy. (Lamentations 3:22-23) It is in this place of humility that God pours out His lavish love, directly into your heart, which has the capacity to heal every wound, fulfill every need you will ever have. (Romans 5:5) This spiritual truth is heavy on the Father’s heart right now. He longs to show you just how deeply, completely you are loved. Go to Him, open your heart, and prepare to be overwhelmed by His all encompassing, burning, accepting, approving and healing love. It is truly, all you need.

With much love, Jessica
