Metanoia: The Invitation to Come Up Higher
There is a Greek word that beautifully captures the heart of the Kingdom Mindset: metanoia. Metanoia is often translated as repentance, but its meaning reaches beyond simply feeling sorry for sin. It speaks of a change of mind—a transformation in the way we think, perceive, and understand reality.
In other words, Jesus didn't merely come to change our behavior. He came to change our minds. When Jesus began His ministry proclaiming, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near” (Matthew 4:17), He was issuing an invitation: Change the way you think, because another Kingdom is here. This is the invitation of metanoia.
We Cannot Think Like the World and Live Like the Kingdom
From the moment we wake up, we are surrounded by messages telling us how to interpret our lives. The world says, Believe what you see. The Kingdom says, We walk by faith, not by sight. (2 Corinthians 5:7)
The world says, Protect yourself. Jesus says, Love sacrificially.
The world says, Strive, achieve, and get noticed. The Kingdom says, Abide, receive, and know that you are already fully known.
The world says, Your circumstances determine your future. The Kingdom says, Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. (Colossians 3:2)
This is why transformation cannot be a one-time experience.
Metanoia must become a lifestyle.
Romans 12:2 tells us, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
Every day, we are deciding which pattern will shape our thinking: the pattern of this world or the pattern of Heaven.
Come Up Higher
I believe God is calling His people to come up higher.
Not in pride. Not in religious superiority. But in perspective. There is a heavenly perspective available to us that reaches beyond what culture has taught us, beyond what our circumstances are telling us, and even beyond what our own logic can understand. We are seated with Christ in heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6). Yet so often we continue interpreting life entirely from the ground. We see the impossible circumstance. God sees the opportunity for faith. We see delay. God sees preparation. We see lack. God sees Himself as our Source. We see the battle. God already sees the victory.
Metanoia asks us to exchange our earthly interpretation for Heaven's perspective.
This is how to have a Kingdom Mindset. It is learning to think like God thinks, love like Jesus loves, and move as the Spirit leads. And this transformation happens daily. Before automatically believing fear, disappointment, offense, culture, social media, circumstances—or even our own emotions—we learn to ask:
“Father, how do You see this?”
That one question can change everything. There is always a higher perspective available. There is always another invitation to renew our minds. There is always more of the mind of Christ available to us. So today, when the world invites you to think lower, come up higher. Choose metanoia. Change your mind. Change your perspective.
And begin seeing your life from where you are already seated—with Christ.
